Causes of halitosis
Halitosis is believed to be caused by bacteria in the mouth that thrive due to the warm and moist condition of the mouth. This condition is not actually caused by stench from the mouth but rather from the back of the tongue. Bad breath is caused by many different factors. These include, poor oral hygiene including improper brushing of teeth, infections in the mouth as caused by periodontal diseases, respiratory tract infection, substances such as onions and garlic that leave a bad stench in the mouth, dry mouth and some types of illnesses such as diabetes.
Symptoms of Halitosis
The thing with bad breath is that you may have it and totally fail to notice because the odor detecting cells in the nose get used to the awful smell. The best indicator of bad breath however is the reaction of people whenever you open your mouth to speak. Most people will not tell you that the stench from your mouth is chocking but from their reaction when you speak for example turning away or recoiling is a good indicator.Other indicators of bad breath include infections in the mouth for example red swollen gums.
Other symptoms of halitosis include a white coating on the back of the tongue, dry mouth, build up around teeth, and post nasal drip, a burning sensation on the tongue, thick saliva and a sour taste in the mouth.
Preventing halitosis
Sometimes halitosis needs to be taken care of by a medical doctor for a person to be properly treated. However if it is caused purely by dental problems, preventing it should not be very difficult. By simply maintaining dental hygiene, and visiting the dentist regularly, one should be able to stop this condition. Drinking plenty of water is also importance in preventing bad breath as it washes the mouth and loosen food particles thus the bacterial would have nothing to feed on.
Sometimes however, bad breath may be a sign of a serious underlying problem. For example a fruity smell from the mouth would point to untreated diabetes and the smell of urine may point to kidney disorders. In such cases it is important to seek medical advice. Bad breath accompanied with fever, sore throat, discolored nasal discharge and postnasal drip could also show a serious underlying problem and therefore medical advice needs to be sought.
